Introductory -Support Role

Nurse working at a deskSupport roles in the operating room environment include transportation, housekeeping, nursing associate, inventory control, stocking, case preparation, instrument control, scheduling, secretarial duties, and many other support roles.  Many employees or students who are interested in surgery start in one or more of these roles to gain valuable experience in the operating room environment which can help them determine their preferred career interest.  Employment in this area can also provide part or full time financial assistance in their chosen area of interest while attending school.

Each member of the Operating Room Suite Team is an essential component in managing the day to day operations performed within the suite.  The team is only as effective as the least proficient team member.  Infection control practices, quality control, and risk management activities help reduce potential harm to the patient.  Each member is vital to a positive outcome for the patient.  Be alert to employment opportunities as they present themselves. Watch job position listings at hospital human resource departments or talk with instructors or managers to identify a potential opportunity.
